MARKHAM family of North Lincolnshire and from the West Riding of Yorkshire

Family tree pictures - mostly from my parent´s albums

(my attempt at trying to bring them to life!)

The photographs are from the oldest I have found (1859) to over a hundred years later (1988) when we started researching the family tree. All additions in that time frame will be very welcome!

All the names with the surname in bold appear on our tree, and if highlighted and underscored by clicking on the name it will take you straight to this person on the tree.

John Jackson CLARK and Sarah Maria COWLING on their wedding day (25th June) Ashby, Lincolnshire

John Jackson was aged 28 (and a widower) when this photograph was taken and Sarah Maria was 21. This was John Jackson´s second marriage. He was the eldest of 12 children. From his obituary Saturday 13th of May 1916:

The funeral took place on Wednesday of Mr Jackson Clark, who passed away on Saturday. The first part of the service was held in the Wesleyan Chapel. Mr Clark was most highly respected in the village and also held the position of the superintendent of the Wesleyan Sunday School for a large number of years.

Note: Their son Joseph Arthur CLARK died , at sea, during the same month - May 1916 and his name can be seen on the War Memorial in Ashby.

Ethel GILL and Lewis Henry BURRELL wedding photo Wath upon Deane, West Riding, Yorkshire

(Parents of Ethel MARKHAM born BURRELL and Grandparents of Philip Markham)

Between 1910 and 1915

A family photo of James and Hannah MARKHAM and the notes on the back of the photo says "Brothers and Sisters and Nieces” and was written by Harriet Jane WOOD neé MARKHAM and we now know that 3rd from the left back row (next to his father James) was Joseph Robert MARKHAM and far right George MARKHAM, but it has proved to be very difficult to determine which sister is which  (there were 5 in all) on the photograph - as is the date this was taken - so this is an estimate based on the ages of George and Bob. There were 7 siblings in all so there is a sister missing.

The BURRELL family - Lewis Henry had just enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps as a driver (although he was a butcher by profession) and was about to be sent to France. He served until 1919 in France on the Western Front and later East Africa, and was hospitalized and sent home with severe malarial attacks.

1919

The BURRELL family minus their father Lewis Henry was at this time in East Africa. He was named (with Army rank and number) on the "Absent voters list in Grimsby 1919" and  never returned to his family. He died in Mansfield in 1952 and as far as we know never saw his wife and his girls grow up or even let them know of his whereabouts.

NOTE: Seeing his name and service details on the "Absent voters" site proved to be a big breakthrough as that also gave access to his army records which were fortunately  intact and not lost as many others were. His date and place of death was the result of 2 days search at the National Archives in Kew.

RESEARCH IN LINCOLNSHIRE AND WEST RIDING 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2009

These photos show just a very small amount of research done!

The family bible that was passed on from Raymond MARKHAM to his son John MARKHAM

A lot of the information written in here started our research into the family tree in 1988

The gravestone of Mary MARKHAM born LADLOW died in 1881. Also buried here is her father John LADLOW.

Killingholme Parish Church, Lincolnshire

Note: Her husband Thomas MARKHAM was buried in Goxhill where he died 56 years later.

The gravestone of Sarah Ann ELSOM born CLARK, Elsham Parish Church, Lincolnshire

Note: she had 12 children and John Jackson was her eldest.

There are quite a number of Elsoms in the churchyard, and one named on the WW1 memorial plaque inside the church itself.

Philip Markham´s Great-great-grandmother

War memorial in Ashby, Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire.

(Just to the right of cousin John´s elbow)

Joseph Arthur CLARK RN

From the Commonwealth Graves Commission Website: Stoker 1st Class, Royal Navy, (RFR/PO/B/5812), H.M.S. "Tipperary.", 01/06/1916, SS/106366, Son of John Jackson Clark and Sarah Clark, of Ashby, Scunthorpe; husband of Lizzie Clark, of 33, North Parade, Ashby, Scunthorpe. Awarded Messina Medal, Commonwealth War Dead

Note: Died at sea May 1916 aged 27 leaving a widow and 2 children.

This should be the spot for the gravestone of Betsy MARKHAM born CLARK at Brumby Cemetery, Ashby.

Grandmother of Philip Markham. She died in 1937 aged 52.

Note: With the help of Rena MARKHAM (pointing where the grave is) and the Cemetery archives we found the original ledger from 1937 and the entry for her funeral. The plot is G2-68 and the cost was £1 10s 6d dated/paid 3 December 1937.

Armed with a plan of the area showing the plot numbers we had help from the gravedigger shown here helping Rena. We eventually found the spot after a lot of searching, and as he sheepishly admitted after a while he wasn´t too good at reading or for that matter at writing either, but after having worked there for over 30 years could remember a lot of plots by heart. Due to his kindness and after having his lunch interrupted we found it in the end.

The gravestone of Auntie Nell and Uncle Tom, Wath-upon-Dearne, West Yorkshire

Note: both the ages and dates of both - almost 10 years to the day.

Rose Cottage, North End, Goxhill, Lincolnshire.

This was the home of Thomas and Rebecca MARKHAM until his death in1937.

We were very kindly invited in the house, in which the original house and rooms are used as reception rooms. Apart from new windows and door the house is easy to imagine what it was like then. Even the original fireplaces are in each room. The original house has been extended to the rear tripling the original area by the present owners Mr and Mrs Sharp.

John and Rena MARKHAM inside the ground floor room to the right of the main door.

5-3 The Screeds in Ashby was the home of John Jackson CLARK and Sarah Maria COWLING on the 1911 census

The graveyard at Ulceby Parish Church, to the left the gravestone of Jane MACHIN née MARKHAM and to the right of George Markham - unfortunately NOT one of ours. Photo taken in March 2009

The original Parish Records for Binbrook, viewed at the Lincolnshire Archives March 2009. I was allowed to see these as the microfiche of this was very bad and after speaking to the incumbent vicar of Binbrook Father Walker who told me that he he had originally handed over these books to the archives and they were in good shape then, and after viewing them (very carefully) found them quite legible, although I did not find the entry for the birth of George MARKHAM  in 1801.

Together with June HOPE née SENIOR we were shown the grave of Jane née GILL and Alfred GUEST by Joan Ann Lees HOPE née GUEST
